LOAD CELLS HELP ENSURE QUALITY IN TEXTILE MANUFACTURE

West Yorkshire based weighing and control specialist HK Process Measurement has chosen load cells made by Thames Side Sensors for an innovative system which helps textile manufacturers improve quality and cut costs.

Wool and synthetic fibres must be treated before being turned into yarn, a process that includes scouring, dyeing and lubrication with oil and water.   Traditional manual lubrication means evenness of application can be problematic.   HK Process Measurement is the only company which supplies a complete "dynamic weighing" system, a belt weigher which provides automatic compensation for changes in the volume of wool or fibre, ensuring even lubrication.

Shear beam load cells with an unusually low capacity were required for the system.   The weigher uses two, one under either side of one end of a conveyor belt.   A control panel integrates their output with the speed of belt signal and the flow rate for oil and water is then calculated and controlled via valves.   Resistant to movement and highly accurate in difficult circumstances, their lowest capacity is normally 500kg.   The T70 load cell can be supplied with a capacity of 100kg.

The system has been taken up by several textile manufacturers.   Calder Textiles, a West Yorkshire carpet manufacturer, has seen improvements since installation.   Customer satisfaction has increased, oil wastage is down, and yield has improved.   In addition, the wool or fibre is now oiled nearer the end of the treatment process so more machines and ducting are kept clean.
